DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

There’s something about rhyming. Something so natural to me. As a culture, I’ve grown up around it. When I’m speaking to people, at times they’ve asked me “Are you talking or rapping?” Freestyling and rapping was just something we did. It’s what attracted me to Shakespeare, it’s an incredible and ancient form of storytelling that lives through hip hop and slam poetry today. I’ve always wanted to bridge my two favorite things, film and performance poetry. “Beat Blue” has given me that chance. Writing a whole short film in rhyme was a beautiful challenge for me and an exciting characteristic for the cast and crew to dive in to. The Northern Film School was game and allowed us to have a lot of freedom with the approach. Stunts, Police, Chase Scenes, and Rhyming all grounded in a story with themes very personal to me. There’s always an idea that’s quoted often, that I’ve aligned myself with. This idea that time heals all wounds. I believe it, although sometimes there’s not enough time to do so, but time being infinite - eventually the wounds will heal. Not a stranger to sibling struggles, I drew from my own experiences to create the dynamic within this film. Family isn’t going anywhere, and time with them is worth more than anything else.
